Two people were killed in a Minneapolis airplane accident outside Sunday.

According to officials with the Wright County Sheriff’s Department, emergency crews were called to a swampy crash site in Clearwater Township shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say two people were in a small airplane that took off from a private air strip in Sherburne County on a leisure flight.

Witnesses say the plane was doing tricks when the engine stopped. Police continue to investigate the exact cause of the engine failure. The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families.

Neighbors say one of the victims was going to be married next weekend.

Shrif’s Sgt. Todd Sandin said it is unclear whether the owner of the plane, from nearby Becker, was onboard at the time of the crash.

Wright Co. Eggs Connected with Salmonella Outbreak

Posted on August 20th, 2010 No Comments

Wright County Eggs, the Iowa manufacturer responsible for 320 million eggs that have been recalled nationwide, revealed Thursday more brands that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Contaminated eggs were first taken off the shelves Friday, after thousands of people around the country have been sickened with salmonella. Eggs that are part of the recall should not be eaten and can either be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Food and Drug Administration officials say the recall is among the largest egg recalls in recent years. “I would anticipate we will be seeing more illnesses reported and likely as a result of the outbreak,” Christopher Braden of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The CDC said it will use advanced molecular tests to help identify cases from the outbreak. State and federal officials have conclusively traced cases in California, Colorado, and Minnesota to Wright County Eggs.

A 12 year-old girl in Minneapolis may be charged with driving while intoxicated, after crashing into a garden Wednesday night, police say.

According to officials with the Winona County Sheriff’s Department, the girl was driving along County Road 12 when she mistook the gas pedal for the brake, struck a highway sign, drove through a yard, and crashed into a garden bed. Police were suprised when they stopped the girl, whom they suspected of drinking, as she said she was only 12. Even more remarkable is the fact that a licensed driver, 19 year-old Benjamin Repinski, was a passenger.

A preliminary breath test showed the girl had a blood alcohol content of 0.09 percent.

The girl sustained back injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Repinski was not injured in the accident.

Minneapolis to Pay $35K in Car Accident Settlement

Posted on July 2nd, 2010 No Comments

The Minneapolis city council approved a $35,000 settlement Friday in the case of a 63 year-old victim of a car accident with a city employee.

According to a city council report, a city employee driving a front end loader ran a red light and struck Lynda Gronber’s vehicle in December 2007. Gronberg suffered “significant injuries” in the accident, according to the report, and her car was totaled.

Tom Miller, the Minneapolis Assistant City Attorney, examined the details of the case and decided to settle with Gronberg.  Gronberg incurred more than $5,000 in medical expenses as a result of the accident and lost about $3,600 in potential wages. Miller says it appears the driver of the front loader was not negligent and will not face disciplinary action.
