April 10, 2008 – American Airlines Continues Flight Cancellations
American Airlines canceled more of its scheduled flights today, as it continues to ground and inspect its MD-80 aircrafts. More than 2,400 of American Airlines’ flights have been canceled since it first began inspections on Tuesday. A statement issued by the carrier, which is currently the world’s largest, states that they are conducting additional inspections to ensure “precise and complete compliance” with the FAA’s directive regarding wiring in the MD-80 aircrafts’ wheel wells. American has inspected 170 of its 300 MD-80’s, but only 80 were back in operation as of this morning, compared to 60 on Wednesday morning. The airline expects to have 180 of the planes back in use by Friday night, with all 300 in the air again by Saturday night.
The flight cancellations have effected an estimated 100,000 travelers.
American Airlines’ web site provides consumers with information regarding ticket refunds and compensation for people forced to remain overnight in cities away from home as a result of the flight cancellations.
