September 29, 2008 – School Bus Crash Kills 4
A bus crash in northern Indiana killed four elementary-age special education children on Friday afternoon. The tragedy occurred after the bus was hit by a dump truck, causing the bus to careen into yet another dump truck. The county coroner and emergency responders were horrified at the devastation of the crash scene.
The crash occurred at around 3 p.m. about 70 miles north of Indianapolis. The four victims have been identified as Tyler Geiger, 10; Trevor Ingram, 10; Lauren Melin, 5; and Kale Seabolt, 9, all of whom were students at a school in Logansport, Indiana. The only survivor that was aboard the bus at the time of the crash was the driver, Deborah Duvall, 46, who was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. The drivers of the two dump trucks were not injured.
The accident occurred when a moped was turning into a driveway in front of the first dump truck, police said. The truck was unable to stop and swerved to avoid hitting the moped, but collided with the school bus instead. The bus was knocked onto its side and slid into the oncoming lane where the second dump truck crashed into the roof of the bus. The bus finally came to a stop in a ditch on the side of the road. According to police, all of the children were properly restrained with a seat belt or child safety seat.
