An off-duty police officer was killed in a Minneapolis motorcycle accident Thursday.

According to officials with the Lakeville Police Department, 46 year-old Sgt. Brigham Strole, a 20-year veteran of the force, was killed after being thrown from his motorcycle shortly after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, in a residential area of Lakeville.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the accident, which occurred on Jordan Court just south of Jonquil Avenue. Police say Strole hit his head on the curb when thrown from his motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, authorities say.

Lakeville Police Chief Thomas Vonhof said it’s the first officer death of any kind during his 31 year with the department. “It’s been very traumatic,” he said.

Two people were killed in a Minneapolis airplane accident outside Sunday.

According to officials with the Wright County Sheriff’s Department, emergency crews were called to a swampy crash site in Clearwater Township shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say two people were in a small airplane that took off from a private air strip in Sherburne County on a leisure flight.

Witnesses say the plane was doing tricks when the engine stopped. Police continue to investigate the exact cause of the engine failure. The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families.

Neighbors say one of the victims was going to be married next weekend.

Shrif’s Sgt. Todd Sandin said it is unclear whether the owner of the plane, from nearby Becker, was onboard at the time of the crash.

Wright Co. Eggs Connected with Salmonella Outbreak

Posted on August 20th, 2010 No Comments

Wright County Eggs, the Iowa manufacturer responsible for 320 million eggs that have been recalled nationwide, revealed Thursday more brands that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Contaminated eggs were first taken off the shelves Friday, after thousands of people around the country have been sickened with salmonella. Eggs that are part of the recall should not be eaten and can either be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Food and Drug Administration officials say the recall is among the largest egg recalls in recent years. “I would anticipate we will be seeing more illnesses reported and likely as a result of the outbreak,” Christopher Braden of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The CDC said it will use advanced molecular tests to help identify cases from the outbreak. State and federal officials have conclusively traced cases in California, Colorado, and Minnesota to Wright County Eggs.

12 Year-Old Injured in Suspected DUI Crash

A 12 year-old girl in Minneapolis may be charged with driving while intoxicated, after crashing into a garden Wednesday night, police say.

According to officials with the Winona County Sheriff’s Department, the girl was driving along County Road 12 when she mistook the gas pedal for the brake, struck a highway sign, drove through a yard, and crashed into a garden bed. Police were suprised when they stopped the girl, whom they suspected of drinking, as she said she was only 12. Even more remarkable is the fact that a licensed driver, 19 year-old Benjamin Repinski, was a passenger.

A preliminary breath test showed the girl had a blood alcohol content of 0.09 percent.

The girl sustained back injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Repinski was not injured in the accident.

Minneapolis to Pay $35K in Car Accident Settlement

Posted on July 2nd, 2010 No Comments

The Minneapolis city council approved a $35,000 settlement Friday in the case of a 63 year-old victim of a car accident with a city employee.

According to a city council report, a city employee driving a front end loader ran a red light and struck Lynda Gronber’s vehicle in December 2007. Gronberg suffered “significant injuries” in the accident, according to the report, and her car was totaled.

Tom Miller, the Minneapolis Assistant City Attorney, examined the details of the case and decided to settle with Gronberg.  Gronberg incurred more than $5,000 in medical expenses as a result of the accident and lost about $3,600 in potential wages. Miller says it appears the driver of the front loader was not negligent and will not face disciplinary action.

Minneapolis blast injures three

The Interplastic Corporation’s 2015 Northeast Broadway Street’s factory was rocked by an explosion this morning around 7:30 a.m.

Emergency workers and hazmat teams worked together to rush three injured employees out of the building and to proper medical care as well as in the clean-up process that has to occur before the fire department can inspect the area of the explosion. According to the crews at the factory, the scene has left little for firefighters to clean up. The explosion was described as a flash explosion, meaning that there was no fire present.

The investigation has determined that the explosion occurred after workers tried to replace a cap on a container of chemicals. According to the report, no chemical material further contaminated the air or the ground of the area.

Three workers were injured from the blast. One is currently in critical condition, while another is in serious condition. The third suffered acid burns, but those injuries were described as minor.

85-year-old woman injured in NYC nursing home abuse

Posted on June 3rd, 2010 No Comments

A 56-year-old nurse is being charged in connection with a nursing home scandal.

The primary evidence of the case has come in the form of the New York City facility’s security cameras, which caught the incident on film. As the tape runs, the attorney general argues, the nurse can be seen pulling a wheelchair away from an 85-year-old woman, causing her to fall and break her hip, and then ignoring the woman until another nursing home employee walks past the fallen woman.

The tape, the attorney general claims, provides irrefutable evidence that the nurse was the cause behind the woman’s fall and failed to pay any attention to the injured woman until a fellow co-worker came by the situation.

While the video footage documents the incident itself, the defendant’s attorney countered that his client was simply unable to catch the woman before she fell, and, eventually, was the one responsible for calling for help.

The New York State Health Department had previous checked over the nursing home, and stated that there were no regulation-related deficiencies.

Covidien voluntarily recalls trach tubes

Posted on May 26th, 2010 No Comments

The FDA announced via press release that the Massachusetts company Covidien has issued a voluntary recall on selected lots of their tracheostomy tubes. After the death of three individuals was reported to the company, they announced that the product would be recalled until their investigation was complete.

According to the reports, the seal on the tube could be damaged, compromising the integrity of the entire tube. These compromised tubes could lead to severe injury or even death. Tracheostomy tubes, or simply trach tubes, are usually used when a patient is incapable of breathing on their own. They are placed in the patient’s neck to directly open the airway.

The recall only affects Shiley tracheostomy tubes from specific lot numbers, enumerated in Covidien’s press release. Only a certain range of dates covers these lot numbers, and only these tubes are being recalled.

If you or someone you love has been affected by a defective tracheostomy tube or have questions about this recall, contact the liability attorneys of Beltz & Ruth at 800-235-8978 to discuss your situation. Knowing your rights may be the best way to protect you and those you love.

E. coli found in recalled lettuce

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

The FDA is investigating a case of E. coli found in lettuce that was sold in 23 states. Investigators have focused on Yuma, Arizona, following an outbreak model that begins at the farm level.

Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio, recalled the lettuce after at least 19 people had been become sick, and 3 reported critical illness. The recall applies to romaine lettuce with a “best used by” date of or before May 12 and “grab and go” salads on sale at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets, and Marsh grocery stores.

The FDA did not confirm that the outbreak was definitely out of the Arizona farm, but the investigation is centered on that location. The CDC reported that the E. coli found in the lettuce was of the 0145 strain, not the common 0157 strain, making it more difficult to recognize. E. coli symptoms can range from mild diarrhea to kidney damage.

The outbreaks were initially reported by suffering college students at the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and Daemen College.
